This absolutely adorable girl is my new puppy, Willow! As some of you may know, my miniature dachshund, Gretchen, went to California to live with my mother after she kept escaping from our backyard. I desperately wanted another dog and after a lot of research, I decided to get a Havanese. Here’s how the AKC website describes the Havanese: “The Havanese is a small sturdy dog of immense charm. He is slightly longer than tall, and covered with a profuse mantle of untrimmed long, silky, wavy hair. His plumed tail is carried loosely curled over his rump. A native of Cuba, he has evolved over the centuries from the pampered lapdog of the aristocracy into what he is today – the quintessential family pet of a people living on a small tropical island. His duties traditionally have been those of companion, watchdog, child’s playmate and herder of the family poultry flock. His presentation in the show ring should reflect his function – always in excellent condition but never so elaborately coiffed as to preclude an impromptu romp in the leaves, as his character is essentially playful rather than decorative.” (http://www.akc.org/breeds/havanese/index.cfm) While not yet widely known in the U.S., the breed is becoming more and more popular as word spreads because these little dogs are wonderful! The only majorish draw back is that they do require regular grooming. Here’s a couple of shots of Willow after her first trip to the groomer’s:
As it mentions in the official breed description that Havanese were used to herd poultry back in their native Cuba, I couldn’t resist seeing what would happen when I introduced Willow to my four chickens:

I have to admit that I was laughing so hard, some of these images aren’t quite a sharp as they could be, but damn was it funny!
She and Rooster are pretty evenly matched!
She was having so much fun that I couldn’t get her to come in. When I called her, I just got the “can’t you see I’m busy?” look:
For anybody who’s thinking of getting a new dog, I highly recommend these little guys! Just keep in mind that they do require a lot of grooming, and they’re bred to be companion dogs so they’re not suitable for people who are not home much.
